A Leading Expert in Head, Neck, and Facial Surgery

Nick Kalavrezos leads a highly specialised surgical service covering the full spectrum of head and neck conditions, from the diagnosis of oral lesions and facial trauma to the management of advanced cancers. His approach combines meticulous diagnostics with state-of-the-art reconstructive techniques, including microvascular surgery and the use of biomaterials, to restore both function and appearance.

Career Progression and Qualifications

As Chair of a dedicated multidisciplinary team, Nick ensures every patient receives a personalised, collaborative care plan.

A respected figure in his field, Mr Kalavrezos currently serves as President of the European Association for Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery (EACMFS), the foremost scientific society in maxillofacial and head and neck surgery globally. He is also the Lead Head and Neck Sarcoma Surgeon for the London Sarcoma Service, the largest of its kind in the UK.

Nick graduated from the University Hospital of Zurich in 1998, having already committed to a career dedicated to head and neck surgery. He began his training in the Craniomaxillofacial Surgery Department, where he was later appointed Senior Registrar, with a focus on craniofacial trauma. Following a four-year residential programme, he moved to the UK to specialise further in head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstruction.

His advanced training continued across several leading UK centres, including the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Mount Vernon Hospital, St Bartholomew’s, and the Royal London Hospital, where he held roles as Locum Consultant and Senior Registrar.

In 2002, he joined University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as Consultant and Lead Clinician at The Head & Neck Centre. His qualifications include FRCS (OMFS) and FFD MD, reflecting his extensive expertise and dedication to surgical excellence.

Current Positions


Nick Kalavrezos holds several prominent positions in the field of head and neck surgery. He’s the senior surgeon of the Head & Neck Center at University College, London Hospital where he served more than 10 years as the Clinical Lead of the Unit. 

As president of the European Association for Cranio-Maxillofacial surgery he aims to forge the first Europe-wide database for rare malignant diseases of the head and neck and coordinate research leading to the 28th European Congress held in Athens, 15-18 September 2026. He serves as the Lead Head and Neck Sarcoma Surgeon for the London Sarcoma Service and is a founding member of the Centre for Reconstructive Surgery at University College London, where he also holds a Senior Lecturer post.

Additionally, he is an Honorary Consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital, The Royal Free Hospital, and Whittington Hospital, and the Clinical Director at London Head and Neck. He is also a Patron of the charity ‘Saving Faces’, which focuses on facial surgery research. As President of the European Association for Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, he has established links with various European centres to coordinate research and organise international conferences on head and neck cancer and facial reconstruction.

Fluent in several European languages, he regularly lectures nationally and internationally and in 2024 become the President of the European Association for Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery.

Clinical Interests

Nick’s clinical interests encompass a wide range of conditions, including benign diseases of the head and neck, salivary gland neoplasm surgery, thyroid surgery, craniofacial trauma, and cancers of the head, neck, mouth, and tongue.

Nick is interested in the refinement of facial reconstructive surgery and the integration of facial plastic techniques and microsurgery in the reconstructive surgery of the head and neck patient following treatment.

He is also particularly focused on early cancer diagnosis using modern optical imaging systems, which can improve diagnostic accuracy and facilitate the management of potentially malignant mouth lesions with minimal side effects. He is involved in the surgical management of advanced head and neck cancer, aiming to enhance patient outcomes through refined surgical methods and the application of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
